This season KK will be joined by  Garth Knox a beloved figure for composers and string players alike. He began his performing career with Boulez and Ensemble InterContemporain, and was also a member of the Arditti String Quartet giving first performances of pieces by most of today’s leading composers including Ligeti, Kurtag, Berio, Xenakis, Lachenmann, Cage, Feldman and Stockhausen (the famous“Helicopter Quartet”). He has recently become a pioneer of the viola d’amore, exploring its possibilities in new music, with and without electronics, and is in the process of creating a new repertoire for this instrument.

Erberk Eryılmaz will lead the Composers Cauldron this summer. As a Turkish-American composer and performer recognized for bringing the energy of the folk music of his homeland to the concert stage with a creative and dramatic approach, his recent album of chamber works, "Dances of the Yogurt Maker" won a Grammy Award with producer Judith Sherman and received two gold medals at Global Music Awards in 2022.  His compositions have been performed at some of the world’s most important concert venues such as Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C

They will share their insights and experiences with 8 selected participants through group lessons and they will also lead colloquiums on extended techniques for various instruments alongside guest performers.  Open rehearsals are offered for both the guest teachers’ works as well as the new compositions emerging from the participating composers.

The Composers Cauldron workshops provides a forum for young composers to refine their compositions under the guidance of internationally renowned composers. performers dedicated to contemporary performance practice, and to hear their music played and recorded by great players in amazing venues.

Composers will have the opportunity to delve into the rich musical traditions of Anatolia and explore techniques of contemporary music. With a pluralistic instrumentation, composers will be able to explore new sound worlds to express their musical thoughts.

8 composers will be selected to write  5 minute works for any combination of string quartet, kanun, bağlama, kaval/tütek/ney/zurna/sipsi/balaban, and asma davul.

In celebration of our 10th festival, we would request that the new works could reflect a celebratory spirit- in each composers’ individual ways.
